On Koncour Christmas day 3 we are battling it out between three different healthy holiday drinks!
We LOVE eggnog. Unfortunately, Jessie is sensitive to lactose and we stopped drinking milk about 4 years ago. Last year, I found Almond milk eggnog at Dad’s Organic Market in Regina and I really liked it! Jessie had an allergic reaction to it, so it must be one of the spices used because we drink regular almond milk everyday.
This year I was on the hunt to find the same almond eggnog, but the store here in Saskatoon doesn’t sell it. Luckily, milk-alternative beverages are growing in popularity and Sobey’s has started selling three different lactose-free holiday beverages!
I found two different types of eggnog, one made with almond milk and one made with coconut milk. The third one isn’t eggnog, but I thought mint chocolate counts as a holiday drink!
Each drink has different nutritional information, but compared to traditional eggnog, much healthier!
So Delicious Mint Chocolate (1/2 cup): 45 calories 2F/7C/2P
Almond Fresh Noel Nog (1 cup): 100 calories 3.5F/18C/1P
So Delicious Nog (1/2 cup): 90 calories 2.5F/16C/0.8P
Taste test time! I rated them on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 having the highest rating. I was comparing them all to the “traditional” version of the drink.
So Delicious Mint Chocolate $2.99
- Sweetness: 6
- Thickness: 5
- Traditional Flavour: 7
- Buy again: Maybe
Overall, it wasn’t as thick as chocolate milk, but it tasted really good. Not overly sweet but it made a pretty tasty peppermint mocha with my morning coffee.
AlmondFresh Noel Nog $3.49
- Sweetness: 4
- Thickness: 2
- Traditional flavour: 4
- Buy again: No
This brand definitely tasted “healthy”, and by that I mean you could tell it was a lighter version made with almond milk. It was very thin and barely had an eggnog flavour. It basically just tasted like spiced almond milk. Definitely not my favourite.
So Delicious Nog $2.99
- Sweetness: 8
- Thickness: 9
- Traditional Flavour: 9
- Buy again: YES
This is by far the greatest eggnog substitute I have ever tried. It is perfectly thick and tastes almost identical to traditional eggnog. The colour of this one even looked more similar to the real thing. We have a winner! I definitely recommend this brand of eggnog substitute, it will certainly satisfy those cravings. Plus it’s good in oatmeal and coffee!
What’s your favourite type of eggnog? Do you drink the real stuff? Are there any other brands we should be on the hunt for?
